About the Doulas

We are a team of two doulas based out of Nanaimo-Ladysmith, with varied experience
Dorothy Gilbert

I trained through the Aviva Institute of Midwifery in 2008, and am a current member of the Doula Services Association of BC.

I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology from Vancouver Island University.  During my degree I focused on healthcare, Women's Studies and First Nations studies.  My study of anthropology broadened my understanding of the different options women and families choose for their birth and postpartum experiences.

My experience as a doula has led to a firm belief in midwifery care, for women who choose it, but I am confident supporting women with a variety of care providers and birth choices.

I currently take many clients through the Building Better Babies Program at Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Nanaimo, working with many young parents and Aboriginal families.

I believe a foundation of healthy families is health and support during the childbearing cycle.
Dianne Burrows

I have been a doula since 2008 and became a DONA  certified birth and postpartum doula in 2009. I have attended over 75 births.

I have been married for 34 years and have 2 grown children. I have been a bookkeeper all my working career, but once my children left home I needed to do something I have been passionate about since giving birth myself. I have always loved babies and giving birth is an experience no women ever forgets, and I do my best to assist her to have a memorable and empowering experience.

I also take many clients through the Budiling Better Babies Program at Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Nanaimo, and through this position I have worked with many families of varying histories, young parents and Aboriginal women.
