What is a doula?

A doula is someone who provides non-clinical support to a pregnant client (and partner or support people) during her pregnancy, labour and postpartum experience.  This support could mean back massage during labour as well help with other coping mechanisms.  Read more about what a doula is here:   http://www.doulacare.ca/whatisadoula.cfm

Is a doula different than a midwife?

Midwives and doulas are very different.  A midwife serves all your medical needs during your pregnancy, seeing you throughout to assess the health of you and you baby.  This includes ordering ultrasounds, listening to the baby(ies) heartbeat, and other clinical tests.

Doulas serve as a support people.  We work to help you learn about parts of pregnancy and talk about your concerns, birth plans, pain relief choices and options, as well as early parenting skills such as diapering, breastfeeding, and bathing your baby.
